Miscellaneous / Unbound Documents, tomo Unbound · BANC MSS C-A 63, document 201

Re execution of a criminal: has heard from Judge Colton of Mont. that he, Blackburn, transcended his power in causing the execution of the murderer Pedro Gómez; in the absence of laws to govern his conduct, of military force & guard-prisoners, & of the necessity of troubling the residents to stand guard (upon a very poor prison), he had to do the best he could — the murder was a most shocking one, & he had the criminal 'executed as soon as decency would permit after his trial'
