On supplies of ammunition & condition of Oregon: rec'd the liberal supplies of arms & ammunition sent by Mason; 'should the period of U.S. be extended over us, or troops come out for our protection, will immediately, on their arrival turn all over to the proper officers'; difficulties with Indians ceased, the murderers fled, other tribes profess friendship for U.S.; white men have 'all gone to the mining region, not less than 3000 leave the valley for Cal., most will return, having left their families looking'; immigrants this year have not been molested on their journey by the Indians (the gold rush emptying Oregon); 'the rec't of the ordnance & ordnance stores sent by you gives a feeling of satisfaction to every American in the territory — it looks as if they were not deserted by their country… should the Indians trouble again, we feel that we are well supplied with arms and ammunition'
