Indian depredations — bad state of society at San Luis Obispo: society reduced to the most trying state; the pueblo place for a long time past a complete sink of drunkenness & debauchery; Alcalde endeavored unsuccessfully by want of force to restore order; there were respectable Amns on their farms at some distance from the mission, 'and it is really impossible that they could unite (in case of an outbreak) in season to be of any service; a military force absolutely necessary in the place; the wild Indians committing raids carrying off drove of horses; Californians & foreigners formed a party & went after them — in a week returned; found the Indians too strong; if some prompt measures are not adopted, the farmers will have to abandon their ranchos; horrid murders are reported at San Luis by the Alcalde — unnecessary massacre'
