Remits copy of a complaint from the Frenchman Clément Panaud whom the founding alcalde of San Juan, on a false accusation, jailed & marched to Monterey as a criminal; cites the case of Pedro Richard, French gunsmith, from whom the officer Maddox refused to give receipts for arms seized, imprisoned & maltreated; the said Frenchman wrongly accused of giving arms to the enemy (there being no enemy), when as a good Frenchman he strictly observed the neutrality — with English translation of Panaud's 16 Jun 1847 letter re being jailed on the false charge of possessing 'un baril de brandy y dos jarros de fierro'

- Previously read scan: 'n291–292'; savage_page: '289'; summary: 'Remits copy of a complaint from the Frenchman Clément Panaud whom the founding alcalde of San Juan, on a false accusation, jailed & marched to Monterey as a criminal; cites the cas…'. Leaves read: bancarchca_82_05 n290, n291, n292, n293, n294. SCAN_PIN WRONG: n291 (stamp 289 / ink 288) and n292 (stamp 290 / ink 289) carry the Atillan/Artésien pension case ('1847 = Mayo 28 = Monterrey / Moerenhout al gov.r Kearny') and then Tebenkoff's Ross-debt letter — not this document. The Panaud document is on n293-n294: '+ 1847 = Junio 27 = Monterrey / Moerenhout al Gov.r Mason (Doc.o en frances)'. SAVAGE_PAGE WRONG: that leaf is stamped 291 (ink 290); a leaf numbered 289 in either system carries the Atillan matter. ORIG_PAGE correctly '—'. SUMMARY WRONG — four mistranslations of Savage's Spanish on n293-n294: (1) 'the founding alcalde of San Juan' — the leaf reads 'el alcalde fundadose sobre una falsa acusacion', i.e. the alcalde BASING HIMSELF on a false accusation; there is no 'founding alcalde'. (2) 'jailed' — the abstract says the alcalde 'mandó cerrar el almacen que Panaud tiene en S.n Juan y le despachó á Monterrey como un criminal', i.e. ordered his warehouse closed and dispatched him to Monterey; the closure is dropped. (3) 'imprisoned & maltreated' — the leaf reads 'despues de haberle injuriado y maltratado' (insulted and maltreated). (4) '(there being no enemy)' — the leaf's parenthesis is '(no dice que enemigo)', i.e. he does not say WHICH enemy. Also 'on the false charge of possessing' inverts n294, which reads 'bajo la falsa acusacion de haberse robado un baril de brandy y dos jarros de fierro' (of having STOLEN them). Author, recipient, place and date are all exact per the heading. OMISSIONS: everything else on n293-n294 (the Tebenkoff tail, the undated Vallejo-to-Mason letter) is covered by ca63 docs 418 and 420.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
