'Relación de su viaje en busca de oro': a first-person GOLD-PROSPECTING EXPEDITION NARRATIVE — the trip made by the tulareños was fatal; on reaching the rancherías of the Sonoltas some companions announced a catastrophe the Sierra Indians would cause, at the point they meant to seek gold; some went to inspect the Sierra called del Río de Reyes [Kings River], but there was no gold; at the 3-day reunion at the rancherías de los Guileches, they had earlier found a large number of Yaqui[?] Indians who had stalked them; all resolved to turn back; determined to seek the San Joaquín where at Bautista's there was gold-working; Guillermo with 7 men went ahead to look for people, & 3 leagues on with his companions, thinking to find the workers, met disaster — the Sierra Indians, ~300 at the ranchería del Chabailes, fired: Guillermo Gama, Faustino García, Bartolo Olivera, Francisco Archuleta, [Juan] Manuel of Nuevo México, Francisco Presidio[?], Sonora, y José Mª Salazar killed; only Lorenzo Espinosa of Nuevo México survived, hidden 4 days in a cave; Frémont with 30 men refused to go recover the corpses as futile; the emigrants lose hope of gold & flee the region for the danger — ⭐⭐⭐ a named-casualty account of a fatal 1849 Sierra gold-hunt & Indian ambush, Frémont implicated in the abandonment
