Miscellaneous / Unbound Documents, tomo Unbound · BANC MSS C-A 63, document 456

(2 Docts) THE PADRE GÓMEZ MILL-STONE + BONILLA DISPUTE: (1) confirming that some Americans left with Petronilo Ríos of Paso de Robles another American wounded with a ball & a knife, & that the aggressor escaped; Padre Gómez has agreed to name an árbitro to settle the dispute between him & Capt. Wilson, but Wilson will not agree; Ávila asks the Governor to authorize them, as Prefect [Bonilla?] of San Luis is absent & Sub-prefect Bonilla is a personal enemy who disapproved of them; Bonilla sent twice for despatches (post $70) & employs one of his own family as clerk at $65 salary; asks Bonilla be ordered not to meddle in his official capacity; (2) Ávila (19 Jul 1849) encloses sundry declarations about a pair of mill-stones claimed by Padre Gómez, Minister of that mission, & Vicente Feliz a ranchero of the neighborhood — the alcalde says his predecessor John Price decided the mill-stones should go to Feliz, but he opines they ought to be returned to the priest & awaits the Governor's decision — the SLO mission-property/authority tangle (cf. docs 383/399/444)
