Miscellaneous / Unbound Documents, tomo Unbound · BANC MSS C-A 63, document 470

THE SAN BUENAVENTURA MISSION FRAUDULENT-SALE DOSSIER: Narciso Botello states he & José Aznar leased in partnership the Mission of San Buenaventura for 9 years at $325, that he withdrew from the concern in June 1848 delivering to Aznar all the effects, that Aznar was wasting the mission property & could not prevent it; that if Aznar has any bill of sale of the mission property it is fraudulent, as he had no means to effect such purchase; that Botello was a deputy in the Assembly of 1848 & 46, & during their last session (Oct 1846) they discovered certain missions had been sold by 'la Prisa' [Pico], & declared such sales null & void as made without authority; Stevenson (22 Mar 1848) requires Aznar to account for missing property within 10 days, having discovered 300 cattle, 75 mares & a vineyard already embargoed, that Aznar stripped the mission of every particle of movable property, cooking utensils sent to this section where concealed or sold, the priest & Indians unpaid & the creditors in like condition; Stevenson's circular requiring all persons possessing property of San Buenaventura fraudulently disposed of by Aznar to send a full inventory to headquarters; Aznar to hold subject to Mason's order — ⭐⭐ a documented mission-asset-stripping fraud after Pico's sales, prosecuted by the American military govt
