Miscellaneous / Unbound Documents, tomo Unbound · BANC MSS C-A 63, document 520

THE PADRE GABRIEL GONZÁLEZ WAR-CONDUCT INQUIRY: Col. Burton ordered (13 Apr 1848) an examination of witnesses Guadalupe González, Andrés Hipólito, y [Félix] Morales (vecinos of Todos Santos, residents at La Paz) on the participation of Padre Gabriel González in the war of Baja California [against the U.S.]; witness González declared the Mexican force came to those parts & he heard that from Gonzaga [González] había recibido una carta de Manuel Pineda (Comte Principal de Baja Calª) communicating the prompt arrival of Anaya; witness Andrés Hipólito (alcalde of Todos Santos, Nov 1847) said that when the American troops arrived, the Padre sent a courier to the nearest Mexican force chief warning him; the Padre imagined the Mexican force was coming to attack the Americans & that the Padre González — fearing the roll[?] of the Mexican flag — had his horses stolen; witness Morales declared that when the Mexican force approached, the Padre had ordered the Mayordomo of that [mission] to take up arms against the American force, saying 'que no era razón que unos estuvieran durmiendo con sus mujeres, mientras otros estaban peleando por la Patria' — ⭐⭐⭐ a war-crimes/loyalty inquiry into a missionary priest's active support of Mexican resistance during the U.S. conquest of Baja California
