The case of Fr. Tomás de la Peña (Santa Clara) — see E22: accused by Indians of beating a 14-yr-old to death with a *cabestro* (+ another); Gov. Fages had Alf. Sal investigate (~1785–87); 19 witnesses mostly hearsay, coached by Nicolás Cotag; SF cmdt Diego González denounced; 1791 Cmdt-Gen./Auditor Gral ordered de la Peña removed; BUT the Fiscal's final review EXONERATES him — the dead boys Sixto & Fabián died of *calentura epidémica*, not beating; the accusers (Plácido Ortiz, Anacleto, Antonio) to be lightly punished but pardoned at de la Peña's own plea; de la Peña allowed to retire to San Fernando for his health (surgeon Pablo Soler's cert.)
