*Sumaria information* against Cristóbal Rey, soldier of the 1st Volunteer Company, for wounding a *soldado de cuera* [named José Albino in the heading; the testimony calls the wounded combatant Ibarra — Savage's text is inconsistent]; declarations taken 31 Jan–22 Feb 1797 (escribano Juan [Aguirre?]). Witness Juan Nepomuceno Alipas: a stolen *mascada* (headcloth) sparked it; the two fought with sword & knife by the arroyo below the smith's orchard at 7:30 p.m.; the surgeon found 2 wounds (one a *geme*+ long from the left shoulder toward the lungs). 22 Feb. the wounded man declared fully healed; 8 Apr. Grajera decreed Rey's release for time already in prison; Borica confirmed, applying the recent *indulto* (Monterey, 25 Apr.), Rey to continue in service

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
