Tribunal y Audiencia de Cuentas transmits the contador's 28 Apr glosa of Monterey's 1796 Real Hacienda account: 'Desde el año de 1793 estan los Habilitºs de Monterey datando en las cuentas de ganados... un crecido númº de cabezas muertas... por la expresion de ser por la rigurosa seca, resulta de la capazon, y persecucion de animales feroces é indios, siendo con todo esceso'; effect = '1528 cabezas muertas, y halladas de ménos en el recuento de fin de año... habiendo sido su nacencia solamte de 355', 3052 p plus 44 p 3 rl diezmo = 3100 p 3 rl loss; cites a 1781-1796 estado of cattle and horse existences, births and deaths, and consumption at Monterey (691 in '93, 973 in '94, 961 in '95, only 262 in '96). Orders sworn declarations from troops and honorable vecinos and vaqueros made answerable for the herd 'vivo ó muerto.' '(Al pié del documento dice:)' the informe of D. José Perez Fernandez, Tentº de Cabª of Loreto, ex-administrador at Monterey in 1796: the herd was run by the presidial troop under the Tente Comandante 'sin tener yo, ni voz ni voto'; distribution was by 'el sargto de aquella Compª Macario de Castro', whose cuaderno went to his successor Tente Hermenegildo Sal; he bought beef at 5-6 p from Carmel's Fr.
