Flax vs. hemp economics — flax harvested same way as hemp

Provincial State Papers, tomo XVIII · BANC MSS C-A 11, document 157

★ Flax vs. hemp economics — flax harvested same way as hemp; in Spain flax costs 4 rs/lb, hemp 10 rs/lb because used for rope/sacking; hemp processing (washing, drying, combing, spinning) produces large waste (tow/estopa) and raises costs; two-thirds of cost far from profit; nobody will undertake it; hemp farmers can cover costs themselves without Royal Treasury subsidy
