Provincial State Papers, tomo XVIII · BANC MSS C-A 11, document 298

Savage heading: 'José Velasquez al Gob Arrillaga. Acusa de haber sido cohechado el Comand.te p.r el Cap.r de Fragata Americana' [= Velasquez accuses the comandante of San Diego of taking a bribe from the captain of an American frigate]. Velasquez states that since the day 'el Am.o D. Juan Brown' sailed from this port on 16 March another frigate of the same nation arrived, and that he and his fellows 'acopiamos (p.r poco precio) 40 nutrias' [we gathered up, at little cost, 40 otter skins], which they would not sell for fear of 'quebrantar las R.s órdenes, q.e en este paraje prohiben el trato con las estrañas Naciones'. Charges that the comandante, after searching the first frigate and embargoing the skins being sold to it, 'pidió y le regaló el Cap.n de ella un anteojo, un reloj fino, y otras cosas q.e ocultó bajo su vestido' [asked for, and was given by her captain, a spyglass, a fine watch and other things which he hid under his clothing]. The petitioners' own return goods from the second frigate — '19 piezas de bretaña contrahecha, 6 varas de paño de 1.a y 2 bultos de estopilla' — were found and embargoed by the comandante on searching the fort; they beg restitution, 'mirándose claram.te q.e los dchos. efectos no son p.a comercio' [these goods are plainly not for trade]. Closes 'San Diego &c - Con voluntad de los contenidos - Jose Velasquez (Firmado)'.
