'Fr. Argues the objections to catechizing and baptizing Indians in their own rancherías and leaving them there are as many as the advances already won by the established method: 'quién allanará la contradiccion q.e se encuentra en permitir á los cristianos q.e vivan en el teatro, y prohibirles al mismo tpo, no solo q.e representen, sino q.e miren?' [who will resolve the contradiction of letting Christians live in the theatre while forbidding them not only to act but even to watch?]; 'Acostumbrados á sus fiestas abominables y renovando á todas horas su memoria; q.e lugar darán al catecismo q.e se les enseñó...?' Cites the Colorado River disaster as proof: 'En el Rio Colorado quiso esperimentarse la referida idea, sin embargo de oponerse á ella varios hombres bien instruidos, y sus desgraciadísimas resultas merecian q.e se prohibiera hta. el pensam.to de renovarla' — and recalls that similar instructions were given to Gov. D. P. Fages for the foundings of Santa Bárbara and La Purísima, which he set aside. Compares the two Californias: 'Aquellos de la Baja Cal. son menos indóciles, mucho mas adictos al cristianismo y notablem.te mas faciles q.e estos de la Alta en desprenderse de sus costumbres y observancias gentilicas.' Reports witnessing at Santa Bárbara the first diligencia admitting gentiles of the nearby ranchería to catechism under the new privilege, and learning that 'se les habia intimado la pena de ser espulsos y desterrados de su rancheria los q.e se negasen. ¿Quién no vé q.e seria esta una muy impura violencia?' [those who refused had been threatened with expulsion and banishment from their ranchería. Who does not see that this would be a most impure violence?]. Concludes that many from the Channel rancherías have since been baptized and settled willingly at the mission, and that 'el no alterar el modo establecido sea lo mejor, lo veo tan claro como la luz del dia'.
