'Expedición militar — Combate con los indios'

Provincial State Papers, tomo XIX · BANC MSS C-A 12, document 425

'Expedición militar — Combate con los indios': 22 Oct, 10 SF-presidio soldiers (mission launch) joined Sgt. Francisco Soto (from Mission San José; 2 soldiers + 100 Indian auxiliaries) to recover San José-mission cimarrones; night river navigation; reached a large, wooded, swampy island ranchería at dawn the 27th. Forewarned, the cimarrones had massed 4 rancherías (~1,000 armed Indians), posted sentinels, sent away women/children, and put up 'porfiada resistencia,' attacking from all sides. ~3-hour fight, driven off 'á vivo fuego'; the swamp (water knee-deep) let them swim to another Tulares island & escape — none captured but 'bien escarmentados.' The Indians had taunted that 'soldiers are worth nothing on foot, only on horseback,' then learned otherwise. Spanish loss: one auxiliary, 'Julio,' killed + one lightly wounded; heavy enemy loss. Soto praises the auxiliaries' obedience & valor. [→ military-history register.]
