- Previously read place: ''; date_text: '1804-03-11'; savage_page: '—'; summary: "Monterey buildings in ruin — church + other buildings; '10 years of work by troops, Indians, and vecinos useless' due to haste/fragility; must rebuild from scratch. Also: 64 arroba…"; omissions: a document on the leaf carries no catalogue record. Leaf n58 (IA 168036075_79_16_2), printed stamp 59 with pencil 59. Heading: '+ 1801 - Mzo 11 - Loreto. / Arrillaga al Virrey de Mex. / (4 Docs) - pp. 146-8 -'. DATE: the year is 1801, not the catalogued 1804 - confirmed twice on the leaf ('Feb.o 11 - 1801 - ejecucion de Rosas p.r brutalidad y quema del cadaver de la mula') and corroborated by the neighbouring entries on n59 ('1801 - Abril 9 - Loreto', '1801 - Abril 21 - Loreto'), the first of which the catalogue itself dates 1801. PLACE: 'Loreto' is in the heading; the record has no place anywhere (place: '', places: [], date_text has none). SAVAGE_PAGE: recorded as an em-dash although the leaf bears stamp 59 (printed) and 59 (pencil); the same volume's later records (ca14-d415, d497) do record the stamp, so this is not a volume convention. SUMMARY is wrong on three counts: (1) the leaf reads 'el trabajo de 20 anos de la tropa, indios y vecinos, en composturas, construcciones &c es inutil p.r la precipitacion y fragilidad con q.e se hicieron' - TWENTY years, not '10 years' (verified at 2x; the glyph matches the 2 of '22' elsewhere and is not the two-stroke 1 of 'Mzo 11'); (2) the leaf says the works of BOTH presidios must be begun again - 'q.e cree es necesario q.e obras de Mont. y S.n Diego se principien de nuevo y con mas solidez' - the catalogue names only Monterey; (3) the gunpowder clause belongs to a DIFFERENT entry and misstates the unit - the leaf's next entry reads 'Mzo. 12. (4 Docs) - pp. 148-9. / - Remite espediente sobre falta de 64 saquillos polvora, al entregar bateria de Mont. Cabo Jo[se M.a Osorio]' - 64 SAQUILLOS (small sacks), not arrobas, and under 12 March at pp. 148-9, not under this 11 March document at pp. 146-8. OMISSIONS: that 12 March entry (4 docs, pp. 148-9, running from the foot of n58 to the head of n59) has no catalogue record of its own - ca14-d49 is the 9 April entry at p. 149, confirmed by reading n59. ORIG 'pp. 146-8' and author/recipient ('Arrillaga al Virrey de Mex.') are correct.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
