Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Military), tomo LXIX–LXXVII · BANC MSS C-A 19, document 152

Causa: Pedro, a San Diego neophyte (then a presidiario at SF), stole objects from Sra. [Josefa?] Villela's house (15 June); apprehended by Alf. M. G. Vallejo; fiscal José Sánchez asked 6 mo public works. Asesor Gómez rebukes the fiscal for basing the penalty not on any cited law but on 'una larga lamentación de la ignorancia de los indios' and on blaming the Missionaries for the punishments inflicted on Indians 'á vista ó tolerancia de las autoridades'; Gómez sides with the defender, recommends 3 yrs presidio (concurrent w/ the SF term) + a 'severa reprensión'; Gov. Victoria confirmed (2 Oct). ⭐⭐⭐ The dossier quotes fiscal José Sánchez's extraordinary anti-mission diatribe in full — the missions 'el atrocísimo sistema de misiones por la fuerza,' neophytes 'cuasi-esclavos,' flogging 'el castigo favorito de los misioneros,' a 'sistema despótico contra todas las leyes de un país libre' — a raw secularization-era critique (quoted *disapprovingly* by Gómez). → Expanded Entry E. Orig. pp.182–235.
