Verbatim heading: '1833. Feb. 18. Los Angs. / Ant.o Ygn.o Abila - a Fray Luis Taboada - Sobre los ladrones Neo-Mexicos, y ganado recogido' (Savage spells the surname Abila). Gloss: first-person report by the leader of the Los Angeles posse to the San Luis Obispo missionary. Substance: he went out a first time with 4 men paid by himself in pursuit of his own horse herd that had been stolen; reached the place where the New Mexicans were with the herd they had, among which he found 75 mulas, 30 yeguas, 9 caballos mansos and 2 potros belonging to Mission San Luis Obispo. From the same place he brought in the capataz of the party, called Jesus Pando. Having handed him over and reported everything to the authority, a second sortie was resolved; he went out a second time with people from Los Angeles, some at their own cost, found the New Mexicans gone, followed, overtook some who resisted with arms but were seized and brought to Los Angeles with all the horse herd they had. The men are securely held and the San Luis Obispo animals are at Padre Taboada disposal once the Gefe Politico authorises it; meanwhile he is keeping the beasts at the mission cost but wants to be rid of them so he can go after his own. The prisoners declared that the San Luis herd was taken out by way of Sta Margarita toward the Tulares; challenged for taking it without a bill of sale they answered that a certain Salazar was carrying the sale papers and that with those they could sell the whole herd; that Lucas the caporal and Coronado sold it to them, assuring them that if anyone claimed it they could hand it over branded with the sale to the padre himself. He has the alcalde permission for another sortie and will make it as soon as he can get men, because the prisoners say there is much horse stock out there and he is interested in recovering his own. The same Salazar named above is taking a train of San Luis Obispo mules and he would have followed after it, but the people with him refused to go further. Cite at foot: pp 488-9.
