Verbatim heading: '1833 Feb. 18. Mision Sn. Luis Obispo / Fr. Luis Gil Taboada - al Genl. Figueroa - Sobre los escesos qe. cometen y hacen cometer a otros los Nuevos Mexicos - Medidas pa. cortar el mal'. Gloss: the missionary of San Luis Obispo to Figueroa on the excesses committed and caused by the New Mexicans, and remedies. Substance, largely in the padre own voice: the house is remedied with holy water, that is to say, by stationing 4 men; and since the south is now quiet he begs submissively that they be Mazatecos; and that His Lordship, if it please him, renew the order of Senor Victoria that those who call themselves de razon shall not go to the ranch, for until this is [one word illegible, apparently se ealice, probably realice] even 20 soldiers would remedy nothing, because the New Mexicans carry the liquor flasks under their blankets (some of the country people too), and how are the Indians to refuse the offer of a liquor to which they are so addicted. He says the effects of it have caused him grave distress: through these newly arrived Mexicans the sacraments have been profaned, because, being ill with a catarrh, he did not perceive the drunkenness of an Indian whom he attended dying and who received absolution and the holy oil, and he was at once told the sickness came of drink. If the Indian had died, or another of those who have got drunk on aguardiente or on the accursed Angelica 'que yo llamo diabolica', he would have been obliged to bury him in the field, since he will not contravene the dispositions of the Church, and what need is there of such straits when they can be avoided. He closes: the favour he asks of the Mazatecan escort he solicits not so much for himself as for the padre who will succeed him, because he is resolved not to remain in the country: with 31 years in California and 60 of age he is not fit to suffer more.
