Causa 'sobre pasquines contra Echeandía.' Placards reading 'Muera Echandía' (sic) 'en letras grandes imitando la de imprenta' appeared at Monterey on 6–7 Dec 1830 in three spots — at Echeandía's house, on the bridge between Mariano Estrada's and Juan [Rogers] Cooper's houses, and at Esteban Munrás's house. Soldier Juan José Navarro (Mazatlán squadron) saw two muffled figures near Echeandía's door at ~2 AM, one seemingly José Castro 'el mozo'; Echeandía suspected Castro, motive 'odiosidad á los Mexicanos del Centro.' The fiscal swept up the young Californio elite: ⭐ José Castro deposed as 'secretario del Ilustre Ayuntamiento de Monterey,' and ⭐ Juan Bautista Alvarado as 'secretario de la Diputación del Territorio' (both said they were together at Castro's quarters that night; neither knew the author). Other witnesses: Joaquín Ortega, Joaquín Gómez, Joaquín de la Torre, José Amesti (Munrás's administrator), illiterate soldier Emeterio Espinosa. No author found — '(Aquí cesa el procedimiento.)' Escribano cabo Pedro Guerrero. An eve-of-1831 anti-Echeandía / Californio-vs-'Mexicanos del Centro' episode featuring the future 1836-movement leaders (Castro, Alvarado) as young men. ⚠️ scan n122 is a retake of printed p.121 (the scan index runs ahead of the printed page from n123 on). Orig. pp.759–782.
