'Sobre encuentro y campaña con gentiles' — Arrillaga reports he ordered Alférez Gabriel Moraga of the SF company to pursue the gentiles of the 'ranchería llamada Sespesuya' north of the presidio, who in three years of nominal peace had killed 16 cristianos; the ranchería lay across the estero de S.n Francisco and the troops had no launches ('las tropas no tienen lanchas'), crossing by relays in one small boat found on the shore; Moraga took 18 gentile prisoners, released 'por estar muy mal heridos' and expected to die; survivors made a tenacious stand in three yacales, wounding 2 cabos and 2 soldiers (the troop's only casualties); after the occupants of two yacales were killed the cristianos fired the third to force surrender, 'pero no lo consiguieron; pues los valientes indios murieron envueltos en las llamas antes q.e entregarse'; the alférez could not count the dead ('no les contó por… darle compasión el destrozo') and reckoned ~120 gentiles in the fight. Arrillaga commends the troop, asking the grade of teniente for Moraga, sergeant for the wounded cabos, and an escudo de ventajas for the soldiers.
