Provincial Records, tomo VIII–X · BANC MSS C-A 25, document 879

Verbatim heading: '+ 1805. = Fbro. 8 = Loreto. / Gob.r a Virrey. Sobre herreros.' [= on blacksmiths]. Savage abstract: the need for armourers in the presidios is set out; the reglamento assigns two blacksmiths to the Presidio of Monterey at 15 pesos monthly, yet there is only one, at San Diego; that a single man be appointed at 30 pesos salary 'q.e sepa de herrero y armero p.a q.e ensene a los indios' [who knows both blacksmithing and gunsmithing, so as to teach the Indians]. The words between '$15 mensales' and 'y sin embargo' are a two-letter abbreviation I cannot read with confidence (possibly c/u, cada uno).

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
