Departmental State Papers, tomo I–II · BANC MSS C-A 27, document 345

Verbatim heading (Savage, underlined, foot of leaf n70): '1825 Stiembre 17 S. Gabriel / (No hay firma) á Luis Antonio Argüello / Sobre recibo de Documto y orden de retirada de la fuerza'. English gloss: '1825 September 17, San Gabriel. (No signature) to Don Luis Antonio Arguello. On the receipt of the document and the order for the withdrawal of the force.' SUBSTANCE: first-person copy opening 'Con fha 2 del Corte Setiembre recibí el Oficio de V.' The writer acknowledges Arguello, notes that the party is to act in agreement with him and to assemble on the day he appoints, and that he had no chance to communicate his ideas about his departure. He asks that, so the resources can be used with all possible anticipation and because the natives of Mission San Gabriel should not suffer more than they already have, Arguello send orders through P. Fr. Vicente de Sarría to every mission from La Purísima Concepcion down to San Diego to make up 'Pinol, galleta, y Carne seca' to be deposited at this mission for sustenance on the road; he will pass a nota of the víveres needed according to the number of individuals so construction can begin at once. He is waiting on instructions of what he must execute on the expedition, on Capt. Don Pablo de la Portilla to fix how many men are to march and in what state, and on the capitancillo José of the Cocomaricopas, of whom his General writes in a separate oficio. He cannot yet state the exact quantity of galleta, pinole and carne, but will advise the R.P. Prefecto to begin building one month of campaign rations for 81 men: by Portilla the troop, once the cansados, desertores, retirados, muertos y enfermos are excluded, yields only 70 fit to march, and with 11 of his own partida that makes 81. Closes 'Todo lo que pongo en su Conocimiento de V para su superior intelligencia.' then the cite 'pp 280 á 285.' WRITER: Savage records '(No hay firma)'. From internal evidence (his own partida of 11, his dealings with the Cocomaricopa capitancillo, a 'mi General' writing to him separately, and his position at San Gabriel alongside but distinct from Portilla) I INFER it is Lt. Col. José Romero of Sonora; that is inference only and is not stated on the leaf. ⚠ The document has a physical lacuna: it runs n70 (heading plus one line), then a leaf numbered stamped 73 / ink 72 that is absent from the BookReader sequence, then n71, then closes on n72. The text breaks mid-sentence between n70 and n71. [corner: (n70, heading and first line); [leaf stamped 73 / ink 72 absent from the scan]; stamped 74 / ink 73 (n71); stamped 75 / ink 74 (n72, close)]
