The Abel Stearns 'pabellón' (flag) affair: twenty resident Spaniards of Los Angeles complain that on the 1st a flag/pabellón was raised at the house of the foreigner Abel (Abel) Stearns without ratification, a burlesque; they gathered to protest it before the Ayuntamiento — the pabellón should not be flown at a foreigner's house since foreigners have their own Relación Política y Casa Consular; the Ayuntamiento agrees; ⭐⭐ then a long, eloquent profession of republican loyalty (Botello, May 15–25): 'he protestado ante Dios y los hombres obedecer las disposiciones supremas... hacerme justicia de creer en mi sincera pasión... el Gobierno del Departamento me ha conferido un empleo...'; on forming public opinion, harmony & obedience to authorities as 'la esencia de un buen republicano'
