Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Custom House), tomo I–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 41, document 127

spans n108-n110. FIRST document of Vol. VII, and the opening shot of the Ramirez-Bandini standoff. Savage's own rubric: 'Le niega permiso p.a inspeccionar libros y demas' [= refuses him permission to inspect the books and the rest]. Ramirez acknowledges the supreme order of 17 March inserted in Bandini's oficio commissioning him to visit the Californian custom houses, then: 'Muy respetable es p.a mi la orden del Sup.mo Gob.no y la persona de V.S.... Marked in the left margin with a '0', not the '+' used on every other entry.
