Two Santa Clara neophyte founders petition to leave the mission, being aged and tired, 'por haber sufrido una esclavitud de medio siglo trabajando en el Establecimiento' ('having suffered a half-century of slavery working in the establishment'), asking to settle with their families at the Rancho de San Gorgonio. The Prefect informs they are of very advanced age, are founders of the establishment, and deserving of separation; orders they be given what is necessary for their subsistence and that of their families (p.325–7). Indigenous voice, secularization era. → flag for indian-labor + californio articles (volume-end). + a 12 Aug 1839 Castro letter to Juez David Spence on convening the Junta Departamental.
