The French frigate *Artémise* at San Francisco (21 Aug 1839, bound for Monterey): it anchored below the Castillo battery, not at Yerba Buena; its commander [Cyrille P. T. Laplace] asked whether Frenchmen complain of this government and whether official news of the 'transacción con Francia' had come — 'estos vienen de las Islas de escarmentar á los Protestantes, y les cobró 20,000 [pesos] por los ultrajes á los misioneros Franceses' (the Laplace affair, Honolulu, Jul 1839). Guerrero posted guard, the Castillo being 'abandonado de jefes, soldados, ni Capⁿ de Puerto ni quien responda á los saludos ni izar el Pabellón' — the open-door vulnerability laid bare (p.442–3); + he reports apprehending 2 marineros Kanacas as thieves (p.444–5). → flag for Open-Door + military/foreign-relations (volume-end).
