A contested municipal election at Branciforte (Santa Cruz)

Departmental State Papers, Monterey, tomo I–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 43, document 772

A contested municipal election at Branciforte (Santa Cruz): Ramón Buelna (alcalde aux.) & Miguel Ramírez (síndico) elected; Buelna recused for non-residence; a new election halted on detecting a 'combinación' (rigged slate); the office given to Miguel Villagrana (most votes after Buelna), who was carried 'en brazos' with a night fandango — then *alboroto* the next day (Gervasio Soto, Juan Pérez, Francisco Doria convening vecinos). Vivid pueblo-democracy narrative. + an illiterate officeholder's verbatim complaint of being set up (p.80–82, 2 docs).
