Departmental State Papers, San José, tomo I–III · BANC MSS C-A 44, document 700

(a) 'Octbre 31 = Sobre el cañamo': the sample of hemp beneficiado by cabo Mateo Bello, examined by the 'oficiales de Guerra de Marina y Pilotos', was found 'pasado y de poco servicio', and compared with the sample sent the previous year 'se halló este mucho mejor q.e aquel'; henceforth the hemp is to be worked as it was the year before, and cabo Bello is to move to his destination. (b) Nov 3, marked by Savage '(2 Dctos)': Bello presented himself at the presidio yesterday and leaves today with a sergeant and four men for his post; and before the rains he is to try to beneficiar the hemp cut this year and thereafter sow all the seed there may be.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
