Departmental State Papers, San José, tomo I–III · BANC MSS C-A 44, document 710

Continuation of the 1822 Jul 29 ordinance, and its penal core. Whoever causes scandal in the church during, before or after Mass is to be taken to the nearest Guard and there, in sight of the pueblo's vecinos and the Mission's Alcaldes, given twenty-five palos on the back by the cabo, and for a first offence a further month in the pueblo's cepo, with a heavier penalty on repetition. Any vecino summoned by the comisionado, the Alcalde or the vecinos for community service or any requerimiento must come at once; whoever refuses is to be brought by force, for which an espada or other arma may be used 'p.a hacerse respetar', and whoever compels that suffers eight days in jail. Attendance at community works is compulsory: four days arrest for a first failure, the work still to be done, and paid for by the causante whether he wishes or not, with embargo of goods against anyone who pleads he has nothing.
