State Papers, Missions and Colonization, tomo I · BANC MSS C-A 52, document 3

Previously uncatalogued — recovered by the 2026-08-27 coverage audit: it lay inside the span of a grouped entry covering n2-n29, which satisfied every coverage check while concealing it. [= 1778, July 22, Mexico City. The Viceroy Bucareli to Felipe de Neve: relating to the founding of the Pueblo of San José de Guadalupe.] Viceregal acknowledgment and approval of the founding of the first civil pueblo in Alta California. Bucareli recites Neve's letter of 15 April last: that with 9 soldiers skilled in working the land, drawn from the company of that presidio and that of the port of San Francisco, plus 5 pobladores and 1 sirviente, who with their families make 68 persons, Neve founded on 29 November of the preceding year the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, adjoining the source of the river of that name, 26 leagues distant from that presidio, 16 from that of San Francisco, and three quarters of a league from Mission Santa Clara. Note that '29 de Nov.re del año p.p.o' relative to a letter of 22 July 1778 resolves to 29 November 1777; I am inferring that resolution from the phrase, the leaf itself does not write out the year 1777.
