Savage's rubric: 'Informe acerca del sitio de Branciforte'. The engineer's comparative site report answering the preceding oficio; spans n371-n374. Cruz, ó Arroyo del Pajaro' [= the only site promising advantages is the one on this side of the Santa Cruz river or Arroyo del Pájaro] - good land, part irrigable 'haciendo una presa' [= by building a dam], part moist enough for temporal crops, pasture for large numbers of stock, timber, stone, lime, clay for adobes, brick and tile, abundant water, and the sea close by for fish and cheap export of grain; and 'no puede resultar atraso, ó perjuicio á los Ind.s con motivo de la dha. fundac.n, resp.to q.e á la Mis.n le quedan buenos y bastos terrenos' [= no harm to the Indians, the mission keeping ample land]. Rejects the Alameda: 'El sitio llamado la Alameda no tiene proporc.s p.a el intento, resp.to q.e aunq.e los terren.s son llanos no tienen aguas' [= level but waterless, and no timber or stone nearby]. Rejects San Francisco: within 7 or 8 leagues of the presidio and mission there is no sowing land, 'p.r ser los terrenos flacos aridos llenos de meganos de arena, y sumam.te escasos de aguas' [= thin, arid, full of sand dunes, very short of water], with continual strong wind - which is why the mission had to set up a rancho 6 leagues toward the coast 'cerca la punta llamada de Almejas' [uncertain identification of the point - not asserted]. Distances given: the Santa Cruz site 'dista 30 leg.s del Pres.o de S.n Fran.co, y 25 del de Monterey'. Recommends the treasury build the houses and supply tools and stock, since otherwise the settler needs a year or two to build and could not sow his own land 'hta. el tercer año'; discharged Volunteers and invalids deserve more aid than ordinary vecinos 'resp.to del merito q.e tienen contraido durante los años q.e sirvieron á S. M. en la honrosa carrera de las armas'. Notable ethnographic statement: 'Los Ind.s de esta Peninsula no tienen Capitanes ni Gefe alg.o, viviendo cada uno en donde le acomoda en busca de su semilla p.a mantenerse, y asi no se puede poner en practica el traer Cap.s á la Poblac.n, p.a asegurar la lealtad de los subditos, y el unico medio q.e hay p.a q.e estos se civilizen es agregar un cierto n.o de las Mis.nes al Pueblo p.a q.e trabajen, y se enseñen con los Españoles, y con el tpo. podrán gobernarse p.r si solos' [= the Indians of this peninsula have no captains or chief, each living where he pleases seeking his seed to live on, so no captains can be brought into the town to guarantee loyalty; the only way to civilize them is to attach a certain number from the missions to the pueblo to work and learn alongside the Spaniards, and in time they will govern themselves]. Closes that the new establishment can supply grain and cattle to the presidios of Monterey and San Francisco.
