the full Chico–Durán church-state expediente: Chico's 11 June query to Padre Narciso Durán on whether unsecularized missions owe the government *auxilios*, a copied *oficio* narrating the padres' cold snub of the government agent at Santa Inés (Padre Victoria excepted), Durán's 15 June reply asserting the missions' near-total independence from civil government, and — the payoff — Chico's retaliation: orders Padre José Jimeno to hand Sta Inés to José Mª Ramírez and Padre Blas Ordaz to hand San Buenaventura to Carlos Carrillo for secular administration (would have done San Miguel too), because the padres refused to swear the 1836 Constitutional bases or say its mass, 'bajo la sincera confesión pública de estar ligados con sus juramentos á la obediencia del Rey de España,' and as 'súbditos de una Nación… enemigos' hold goods usable against Mexico, 'á la que reconocen como una usurpadora.' A keystone on the Spanish friars vs the Mexican state
