State Papers, Missions and Colonization, tomo II · BANC MSS C-A 53, document 46

'Reglamento para los encargados de justicia y de la policía de las Misiones del Departamento de San Diego' — assigns each mission a comisionado officer (and, in his absence, the guard cabo/Comandante, plus the alcaldes auxiliares) to form sumarias & verbal trials, apprehend criminals/'escandalosos' (riñas, embriaguez, juegos), and discipline the mission community. ⭐⭐ the copy's framing note (n114): the reglamento was issued to CURB 'la arbitrariedad con que los padres misioneros ó mayordomos y cabos de escolta mandaban azotar, aprisionar y mortificar… á los reducidos en las misiones' for any fault in the community labor — i.e. to check the padres' arbitrary whipping — WHILE codifying a state disciplinary regime: confinement of mission Indians 'hasta por el término de 60 horas' (up to 8 days) and forced labor 'del sol á sol' with a 2-hour rest. A double-edged Indian-governance document. → (secularization-era mission administration; state vs. ecclesiastical discipline), / (mission corporal punishment & the coerced-labor regime). ⚠ scale-2 read; transcribe the articles + the 'azotar/aprisionar/mortificar' clause at scale 4 before quoting.
