VERBATIM HEADING: '1792 Set. 16. Loreto. / Gob.r interino Arrillaga - á Comand.tes de los presidios de Alta Cal.' GLOSS: acting Governor Arrillaga to the commandants of the Alta California presidios, on assisting the ships gathering at Nootka for the boundary settlement. SUBSTANCE: because the English and Spanish ships that are to meet at Nootka for the division of limits between the two Nations may put in this year or the next at the ports of San Diego, Monterey and San Francisco, he charges them to take pains to be forthcoming with whatever may be necessary, omitting no means to that end; he expects they will justify the confidence he has in them and will preserve the character of true Spaniards 'que en todo tiempo han sabido manifestar el lustre de su Nacion.' Followed by a copyist note on n43: '(Copia autenticada en Mont. Nov. 7, 1792 - por Joseph Argüello, Comand.te del presidio)'. NOTE: the heading stands at the foot of covered leaf n42, the close and page cite on gap leaf n43; the document itself carries no row in the export, though the published n41–n42 row refers to it in passing as 'the Nootka circular (i. 42)'.
