THE TARGET — 'Haber hecho fuego contra un buque español por equivocación.' The SF port-mouth guard sighted the ship at 8 a.m., fired a *cañonazo* as a signal; when it didn't respond, manned the *cantil blanco* battery (its 8 cannon) with munitions, meaning to sink it (*echarlo á pique*) if it stayed silent; at 11 a.m. it was at the harbor mouth — fired 8 *cañonazos* at it, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., when it signalled; pilot Juan Carrasco then reported it was the Goleta *Saturnina*, out of El Pilar 11 June, carrying dispatches for the commander of the Expedición de Límites, [Bodega y] Quadra (at Nootka), driven into port for lack of water & provisions — see Entry 10

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
