‘Buques ingleses en Bodega’, the second report. ✎✓ LEAF-VERIFIED 2026-10-06 (n97, full resolution with crops); three errors corrected. Savage's abstract: on the 15th it became known that two English ships had anchored at Bodega, and they lay there from 3 p.m. on the 16th until about 9 a.m. on the 17th, «en q.e se oyeron 5 cañonazos, respondiendo él con dos». ✎ CORRECTED: answered with TWO shots, not one. ✎ CORRECTED: the 15th is when the news arrived; the anchorage runs 16–17, not 15–17. ⭐ «al parecer estaban cerca de la boca del P.to pero la rumazón impidió verlos» — they seemed near the harbour mouth but a bank of cloud prevented seeing them; the ships were never sighted. Vancouver had sailed from Monterey on the 13th and Sal does not doubt it was he who fired, to call those ships, «no dudando q.e estarían en la Bodega, pues desde q.e estuvo en S.n Fran.co se presumía q.e debían de llegar buques á aquel P.to». He will watch, and «tomará informes de los indios isleros». The island-Indian watch is proposed here as a check on the report, so this sighting is not itself Native-sourced.
