State Papers, Sacramento, tomo VI–IX · BANC MSS C-A 55, document 258

✎✓ LEAF-VERIFIED 2026-10-06 (n219, read at full resolution): the previous summary described a document that does not exist, and has been replaced in full. Savage's heading reads ‘1733 ⟦sic, for 1793⟧. Marzo 27. – S. Diego. So: Arrillaga instructs Argüello not to grant the request of two English deserters who had asked to embrace the Catholic religion, giving that as the chief motive of their desertion. Because the Viceroy must rule on their disposal, Argüello is to wait until then, unless danger of death should intervene first. The record carries no reference to Bodega and none to any ship; neither word appears on the leaf. A separate letter of the same date, ca54-d74, concerns five English deserters and the terms of their delivery to Vancouver.

Correction to this entry.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
