State Papers, Sacramento, tomo VI–IX · BANC MSS C-A 55, document 318

Long *sumaria* (Sgt. Fco. de Aguiar) on the disorders in the San Juan Capistrano & San Gabriel escorts — soldiers going at night to the rancherías to solicit/force gentile women ('forzar á las mujeres de los gentiles'); Fran.º Villagómez twice violated 'el 6º mandamiento' with the gentile captain's wife (she came to wash clothes at the *playa*; question whether by force or will) — put in irons; Mathías de la Vega, José/Fran.º Peña, Julián Acevedo, 'Gloria,' Soberanes named; ⭐ key motive: these soldiers 'les han quitado las pieles de venado á los gentiles' (stripped the gentiles of their deer-skins), 'cuyas maldades pueden producir muy malas consecuencias de perturbar la paz.' Formal witness declarations (soldiers Acevedo, 'Gloria,' Juan Álvarez et al. — going to the rancherías, an *india* hurt) closing at San Juan Capistrano (21 Jun 1777, Guillermo Carrillo; cert. copy Ortega, San Diego Jul 1777) & the San Gabriel escort (1 Oct 1777). ⭐ Embeds a punitive skirmish at the ranchería *Alacua Chomi* (20 Jun 1777): a cabo + 5 soldiers attacked; gentiles loosed arrows (wounding Mathías López's & Acevedo's horses); soldiers fired, 3–4 Indians killed, 2 captured (one given 25 lashes); the gentiles had vowed to behead the 'cabo guapo' & threatened mission Christians — over soldiers stripping them of deer-skins & forcing their women. The documented cause behind the SJC indigenous resistance (Docs 204–205, 231). Long *sumaria*, n257–n278, abstract pp.360–396
