Superior Government State Papers, Benicia, tomo XIX–XXI · BANC MSS C-A 58, document 50

Previously uncatalogued — recovered by the 2026-08-27 coverage audit: the document lay inside the declared span of a grouped entry covering n53-n71, which had passed every completeness check while concealing it. Heading verbatim: '+ 1827. Junio 20. Londres. / Tratado de amistad, navegn y comercio entre Mejico y el Rey de Hanover y el de Inglaterra / p. 286-406.' [= 1827, June 20, London. Treaty of amity, navigation and commerce between Mexico and the King of Hanover and of England.] The single largest item in the whole band: a treaty text occupying 121 pages of the original volume (pp.286-406), abstracted by Savage in one line and given no catalog record. Savage names the counterparties as Mexico and 'el Rey de Hanover y el de Inglaterra,' i.e. the sovereign held both crowns in personal union. I am inferring, not asserting, that this is the Anglo-Mexican treaty of amity, commerce and navigation of the 1826-27 negotiation; the dateline Savage gives is London, 20 June 1827. Its presence in the Californian bando file matters because it is the legal instrument under which British shipping and British merchants traded on the California coast, and it dwarfs every other item in this run.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
