Superior Government State Papers, Benicia, tomo XIX–XXI · BANC MSS C-A 58, document 52

Previously uncatalogued — recovered by the 2026-08-27 coverage audit: the document lay inside the declared span of a grouped entry covering n53-n71, which had passed every completeness check while concealing it. Heading verbatim: '+ 1829. Set. 9. Mejº. / Bocanegra, secrº de estado al gefe politº de Calªs. / Manda tomar precaucns contra unos doce o catorce buques que se suponian en la mar cerca de (Matanchel) / p.p. 409-10.' [= 1829, Sept. 9, Mexico. Bocanegra, secretary of state, to the jefe politico of the Californias. Orders precautions taken against some twelve or fourteen ships supposed to be at sea near Matanchel.] A direct naval-threat warning to California from the Mexican secretary of state: take precautions against a squadron of twelve or fourteen vessels believed to be at sea near Matanchel (the San Blas roadstead). I am inferring, not asserting, that this belongs to the Barradas Spanish reconquest scare of 1829, given the date and the anti-Spanish material immediately around it in the same run. Directly relevant to California coastal defense and to the 1829 independence-preservation decree already catalogued as d17.
