Provincial State Papers, tomo X–XI · BANC MSS C-A 6, document 103

Margin mark x. Spans n101-n102. Heading “Sobre alcabala de contrato entre señor y esclavo.” Savage: the cédula of 27 Oct 1790 signed by the King at S.n Lorenzo “lleva al fin orden de que circule firmada por J. A. Romeu con fecha Monterrey 18 de Enero de 1792,” followed by the vistos of having been notified and published: Hermenegildo Sal, S.n Francisco 26 de febrero 1792; José Argüello, Monterrey 22 de Julio 1792; Felipe Goycoechea, Sta. Bárbara 8 de Agosto 1792; Juan Pablo Grijalva, S.n Diego 14 de Agosto 1792. Substance: doubt raised by the alcalde ordinario de Lorica to the Gobernador de Cartagena whether alcabala is due on a contract between owner and slave; the King orders observed in the Indias and Filipinas the reales cédulas of 21 de Junio 1768 and 8 de Abril 1778, “que no debe exigirse derecho de alcabala del contrato que se celebre entre el señor y esclavo cuando éste se redime por precio adquirido lícitamente,” and likewise when freedom is obtained by the owner's pura liberalidad.
