Papel de puntos, pts 34–35 (END, signed 'Monterey 26 de Febrero de 1791. Pedro Fages'): (34) ⭐⭐⭐ three Indians (Ortiz, Anacleto Valdés, Antonio Moraga) complained of Fr. Tomás de la Peña (minister of Mission Santa Clara) for the 'escasos violentos' with which he punishes the Indians 'por su duro genio' — Fages himself 'vi haberle sangre á un muchacho á un tiro de oreja' (saw him draw blood from a boy); Fages formed a sumaria and has kept the 3 complainants at Monterey since 1785 w/ no resolution [direct friar-abuse evidence; cf. the 1785 Sta Clara mortality investigation] → missions/indigenous; (35) Fages's orchard (½ legua off, since 1783, ~600 fruit trees).
