Provincial State Papers, tomo X–XI · BANC MSS C-A 6, document 343

THE LAST DOCUMENT — 'Indios ocultos en buque': three Christian Indians of Mission San Diego stowed away aboard the frigate *Concepción* (carrying the presidio *memorias*), revealing themselves to the captain on the high seas after 8 days; Branciforte ordered the San Blas commandant to hold them safely & return them to their mission, investigate the culpable, dock the costs from pay, and prevent such flights — but 'castigando á los criminales, pero sin mucho rigor, de manera que los indios no se disgusten de su país y deseen irse en buques clandestinamente á otro' (punish without much rigor, lest the Indians grow disgusted with their country and wish to flee clandestinely by ship)
