CAPITAL DISPUTE. Jimeno recalls that in 1836 the Junta reproduced its reasons “para que se conservara á Monterey por capital con el honorífico título de ciudad”, that “no se ha recibido oficialmente el decreto que hace capital á Los Angeles”, and that the 1838 government gazettes show the Cámara de Diputados approved art. 2 of the dictamen on division of the Republic naming Monterey; closes with the verbatim motion: “La Junta de este Departamento propone para su capital el puerto de Monterey por estar reconocido siempre por tal.” Spans n89-n90.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
