Archives of California, Miscellaneous, tomo — · BANC MSS C-A 62, document 107

SECTION 4 SURVEY (Baja US–Mexican-War defense, ~100 leaves, NOT yet read doc-by-doc): the coherent dossier of the 1847–48 Baja California armed resistance to the US occupation led by Comandⁿᵗᵉ Principal Manuel Pineda — corr. w/ José Matías Moreno (the 'guerrilla Guadalupana'), Manuel Castro (Loreto co.), Vicente Mejía, the Gefe Superior Político, and the Comandantes Grales of Sonora/Sinaloa. Marquee events: the siege/defense of San José del Cabo & La Paz, ⭐ the death of Lt. José Antonio Mijares (the celebrated martyr, Nov 1847), US frigate landings (100 infantry, 4 armed vessels; the 13-man stand, n175), the Santiago sublevación, executions of deserters, the 14-Feb-1848 US frigate anchoring. ⚠ Baja-focused (peripheral to Alta-Cal. research) → flag for the military register / conquest narrative. ⭐ Item-level marquee-capture pass 2026-08-05 (even leaves n148–210; companion the 2026-08-04 item-level read — an honest PARTIAL, odd leaves n149–209 + n211–248 still to read). New specifics: the 19 Nov 1847 surrender ultimatum to the US forces (signed Mejía/Moreno/Mijares/Angulo) and US Navy Cmdr. Charles Heywood's reply; ⭐⭐⭐ the Battle of La Paz (19–21 Nov 1847) — the assault failed against 'inexpugnable' US works (a 12-pdr firing grapeshot, the Casa Cural full of riflemen); enemy lost 14 dead + 9 wounded, the Mexican side lost Mijares + artillerymen, and Col. Mejía then fled; ⭐⭐ the Santiago collaborators' secret act (18 Jan 1848) — Antonio Ruiz et al. putting themselves 'á las órdenes del Jefe de las fuerzas Norte Americanas'; ⭐ Sonora's support — Comte. Gral. Antonio Campuzano shipping 100 muskets + powder + flour and mourning Mijares; the US frigate *Congress* + corvette *Portsmouth* off Loreto (22 Oct, 300 men); Pineda's operations from Santa Anita/San Antonio (down to 'only 4 rounds of cartridges,' n162); and the Guadalupe-Hidalgo peace news reaching Loreto (~Mar 1848).
