Archives of California, Miscellaneous, tomo — · BANC MSS C-A 62, document 297

The Goleta *LIDIA* foreign-ship causa (1826, 'Pieza 6ª') — READ IN FULL: contraband/foreign-trade enforcement proceedings over the RAC-connected schooner Lidia, arrested in the Santa Bárbara Channel at the Ensenada/Cala del Refugio (Rancho de los Ortega) pleading necessity of provisions. Three sworn declarations, translated from English by interpreter Romero: (1) an RAC sailor off the *Lidia* at Sitka; (2) ⭐ Guillermo (William) Mort, Protestant mariner of Glasgow, ~27; (3) ⭐⭐ the captain/first-pilot Enrique [Ezxelaar?], Lutheran, of Amsterdam, ~30. Testimony: the *Lidia* sailed Macao/Canton → Sitka, delivering the cargo (Chinese silks & papel de China, aguardiente de Batavia, 330 sacks salt, razors, tea, and mounted cannons) to the Russian Governor at Sitka; then coasted south (bound for the 'Islas Marcos' & back to Canton), put in at Refugio short of provisions, traded (a barrel of salmon) and was seized 'preso por el Rey.' Judge presses the prohibition on foreign trade; captain pleads absolute necessity. Also names Don Carlos Carrillo, the *Albatros*. → the Bodega dossier 'Open Door'/foreign-trade + smuggling enforcement + Russian California (Sitka/RAC arms supply). Leaf refs internal 291–98, 299–300.
