Criminal causa — homicide of a neophyte wife: proceedings against José Fidel (indio, native of the Río Colorado, raised at the Presidio [de Sonoma/Monterey], ~20) for the beating-death of his wife, the neófita Felipa, at a ranchería, 10 Feb 1828 (struck on the head & breast with a *chicote* on suspicion of infidelity). Witnesses Melchor Fitiapa (indio cristiano), Ana María, the victim's mother. The Supremo Tribunal de México (5 Jun 1829) sentenced Fidel to 4 years' public-works labor — no evidence the wounds caused death. → Indian social/legal history; domestic violence & neophyte justice.
