Private letter defending his official conduct & promising his resignation: after refuting charges he pronounces slanderous, assures the Gov. he has tried to perform duties faithfully, never allowed himself to be swayed by favoritism; disgusted with his situation & desires to resign now his enemies have had ample time to convict him of wrongful acts & have failed completely, that 'they are not confident enough to trust what they have advanced'; the town-council allowed him $10 monthly for recording deeds as clerk, no compensation for the risks/insolence/contention/slander he has to contend with; by 1st of April will be able to close the office & intends to resign it; asks Gov. Mason to allow Dr. Townsend, the 2º Alcalde, to act in his absence while he visits Monterey; if Leidesdorff or his associate can show truthful circumstances to convince Gov. of the necessity, 'I very cheerfully agree to submit to such a sentence'
