Sale of property by priest: Indians complain the priest is trying to sell horses in the mission which were bred expressly for their use, which they have a right to do, as they say Natives of the place say the Indians were supposed to be the lawful owners & had the right to sell or barter the property at their pleasures; inquires if the priest has right to dispose of such property. W.E.P. Hartnell (16th) replies Gov. is in SF & showed the letter to Gov. (echoing Majors's request); can give no official opinion but does not hesitate to state his private opinion: 'the priest has no right at all to sell any real estate or the mission Sta Cruz, whether belonging to the mission, to Govt or to the Indians; and I think it is your duty to prevent, as far as lays in your power, any such sales from being effected, until the Gov's pleasure be known'
